What Light Bulbs Should I Be Using To Save Energy?

Among the several options for lighting bulbs a few stand apart from the rest in energy efficiency. The most popular of which, are halogen incandescent, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).
Purchasing these types of bulbs may catch you by surprise by the initial cost, however the savings you will see over the lifetime of the bulb will make up that cost in leaps and bounds.
So what bulb should I buy, and what should I use it for? A few examples are shown below, but it is always a great idea to consult your local home lighting store for detailed information.
Halogen Incandescent Bulbs
While these bulbs meet the federal minimum energy efficiency standard, there are many other options for improved efficiency. These bulbs come in a vast array of sizes and shapes, and work quite well with dimmers.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps
These curly looking bulbs often last ten times longer and use one fourth less energy than a typical halogen incandescent. Because of their extended lifespan, they often pay for themselves in just 9 months, and as they continue running, you save money.  While they do have dimmable capabilities, you must make sure you buy a bulb with that feature.
Light Emitting Diodes
Leading the field for energy efficiency, these lights typically last up to 25x longer than halogen incandescent bulbs. Becoming more and more common, you can find these lights on traffic lights, automobiles, exterior lighting and more. With features like motion sensing and dimming, these are great for all applications.
These options are costlier than their competitors, however the savings in energy and their extended lifespan make up for it time and time again.
When shopping for the lighting you need, stay within your budget, buy only what you need, and look for specials and discounts to help. Although there are many lighting options out there, natural light is the most energy and cost efficient. Talk to your local window contractor for more ideas on how to light your home with natural light, to save on energy costs.
